Guiding Goddess and Lunar Horoscope October 2020

Guiding Goddess and Lunar Horoscope October 2020

October 2020 welcomes us into the beauty, transition, and magick of the Autumn season. This month, it is the Goddess Hekate that guides us to wisdom and esoteric evolution.

Hekate (or Hecate) is known as the Greek Goddess of the Crossroads. She is said to be the daughter of the Titans Perses and Asteria, though many scholars believe the Thracians were the first to worship her; Hesiod credits the birth to the Star Goddess Asteria.  Some say that Hekate is the daughter of Erebus and Nyx, ageless Goddess of the night, while others believe that she is one of the Furies or the last surviving Titan except for Zeus. It’s likely that Hekate’s attributed birth changed as different social groups adopted Her worship, but no Greek clan or tribe ever claimed descent from Hekate. These facts support the theory that she originated outside Greece. There are few legends about Hekate, and no fixed genealogy.

Hekate appears as the Threefold Goddess (maiden, mother, crone; past, present, future) and as having three faces unto herself. In some ancient lore and art, she is depicted as having three heads: a serpent, a dog, and a horse. She has power over heaven and earth and the sea, as well as holding the keys to the gates of the Underworld. Her worship has steadily evolved over the centuries, her lighter attributes of midwifery and granting petitions becoming overshadowed by her functions in cronehood. She is now primarily worshiped as the Queen of Ghosts and Witches, although many modern women are finding her presence and protection within the psychic realms and for life transitions. The ultimate sorceress and diviner, Hekate can teach her followers the path of mystery and magick, and guides the seeker to the depths of the unconscious mind.

Though originally seen as a Maiden, Hekate’s worship has expanded into the Crone aspect of the Triple Goddess, forming the triad in some traditions with Persephone and Demeter. In the myth of Persephone, it is Hekate who carries the torches and becomes the guiding light for Demeter as she searches for her daughter Persephone along the roads of heaven and hell; it is Hekate who hears Persephone’s call. And when it is discovered the Maiden goddess has been taken by Hades to the land of the dead, it is Hekate who, in the depths of the darkness, guides and teaches the skills, secrets, and mysteries necessary for Persephone to reign as Dark Maiden and Queen of the Underworld.

As she is able to easily travel from one plane of existence to another, Hecate acts as psychopomp to newly departed spirits. She is most often associated with the crossroads, the place where paths converge – a place of spiritual wisdom and dark intuitive magick. She rules decision making, that time when a person’s life path divides into something new and unknown. As such, she has the power of transformation, mysteries, lessons, and education of the mind and spirit.

The ability of Hekate to traverse the boundaries of all the worlds was also a unique function to Her and one of the reasons that She is known as the Goddess of Transitions. According to Hesiod, Zeus himself granted Her this access, making Her as powerful as He was. Zeus singling Her out was interpreted by mythographers to mean that She was indeed much more ancient than the Olympians, and that Zeus himself respected Her powers (or feared them).

Hekate was honored with great feasts and offerings of food and drink were left at the place where three roads met. As the offerings left for her were often devoured by the poor, she is also seen as a benevolent goddess, granting prosperity to those in need.

October 1st 2020: Full Moon in Aries

The Full Moon in Aries is a tricky one this month, particularly with Mars in retrograde. The energy here is emotional and volatile, but it can be calmed with a bit of focus and honesty.  Personal relationships are subject to a bit of drama, but remember that everyone is feeling extra sensitive right now. It’s a good time to work your compassion practices. Take care with how you express your feelings, and make a conscious effort to get to the root of the issue instead of focusing on the symptoms.

Specifically, this lunar cycle offers a re-set of sorts; October carries ‘end-of-cycle’ energy and there is an opportunity this moon to cancel any prior life commitments or spiritual dedications you’ve made.  If the pathway you’ve been following no longer feels like the road you should be on, now is the time to veer off towards new adventures.

As the Goddess of the Crossroads, Hekate can be a guide and teacher on your chosen path. Any wisdom you may need in order to choose your new direction, as well as instructions for the journey ahead, can be petitioned from this Goddess. Meditation and lucid dreaming are effective ways to work with Her for this purpose.

October 13th – November 3rd: Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio and into Libra

It’s Mercury Retrograde. Again.  Le sigh.

You know how this works: Communication is a tender-spot, tech issues tend to flare up, and throw in that Mars Retrograde energy and folks will be working your last nerve.

This Mercury Retrograde starts in Scorpio and ends in Libra, giving you the opportunity to explore dark, sensual, intimate feelings regarding your personal relationships, and to come to terms with the loves you may have lost. Be careful not to romanticize the past, but take an honest view of  why those partnerships did not work.

Remember like attracts like, energy matches energy, so you can avoid a lot of the upheaval of any retrograde period by keeping your vibration higher than that presented by the offending planet. Things like meditation, energy and body work, artistic endeavors, and any activity that results in orgasm are key to keeping your auric vibration high. You can also pick up a bottle of my Retrograde Remedy for a magickal fix.

In addition, connecting and working with the Goddess Hekate via divination can also unveil the mysteries this retrograde period holds for you.

October 16th 2020: New Moon in Libra

The New Moon in Libra brings you into harmony with the active and passive parts of your personality. How does the empathy and love you have serve you, and how does it hinder? How does your anger support you, and when is it an obstacle to overcome? When does your sadness become less of a cleanse and more of a wallow?

Spend this lunar cycle exploring each side of your emotional scale, and make any adjustments necessary to bring yourself into self-knowing and balance. You are working towards a true understanding and expression of your Self, and sometimes that requires active engagement in uncomfortable conversations and revealing inner dialogue. Let go of the expectations the world has of you, and take the time this New Moon to discover what it is you require from yourself.

Once again, performing acts of divination with the Goddess Hekate can be revealing and supportive for this work. Tarot, runes, and scrying using water or crystals like obsidian or clear quartz are ideal for this Goddess and this night.

October 31st 2020: Full Moon in Taurus

The Full Moon in Taurus is the second of the month and occurs on one of the holiest and most magickal days of the year. Whether you call it Halloween, Samhain, Day of the Dead, Witches’ New Year, this is a powerful day of honorings, endings, beginnings, and celebrations.

This moon continues the re-set/re-birth theme of the month, now that you’ve gone through the emotional upheaval and cleanout provided by Mercury and the New Moon. This is a passionate, artistic moon providing you with the inspiration and vitality perfect for transformation, manifestation, and transitional magick and rituals to pave your new path.

In this lunar cycle, Hekate’s liminal presence can be the assistance you need to transition into a new cycle of life, knowledge, and spiritual progression. She invites you to push your boundaries and step into a new threshold of being. Acts of divination and meditation regarding your future are ideal for this night. Once you have the info you need, work with Hekate to make your new dedications.
